Binary files contain data and each individual byte can be an ascii character, an integer, pointer, etc.
I did not run into this issue (using the same code and data) until i updated to the most recent version of numpy/scipy (numpy 1.17.0, scipy 1.3.1), so i believe it to be a result of this update (i cannot downgrade, as other libraries that i require for other aspects of this project require these.
